And so last night concluded what has been a mouth watering month for football. The Euro 2016 is over, Portugal are champions and I have an apology to make…
Earlier in the tournament I wrote an article about how I thought the Copa America was a way better tournament, with more goals, more entertainment and more peaceful fans.
It seems that the Euro 2016, as it went on, compelled me to change my opinion. Firstly, with the fan violence, which seemed to change as the trouble nations got knocked out. On top of this, images of can throwing and flying fists were replaced with beautiful images of the Irish fans, singing different songs to nuns, babies, and local women, all done in good taste.
Then there was the football that also kicked up a notch. The beginning of the tournament was a slight goal-shy bore with many 0-0, or 1-0 results. This all changed with certain games like the thrilling 3-3 draw Portugal enjoyed against Hungary or Wales 3-1 victory over Belgium.
The tournament also had a fantastic underdog factor, with teams such as Wales and Iceland making it pretty far and Portugal actually winning the whole thing (Nobody saw that coming).
So to the Euro 2016 tournament, I apologise… Thank you for the entertainment, it was truly a joyous month of football, a gift for us supporters to watch.
Vamos, Portugal, Parabens!
