It is common practice for many of our brightest stars to return home to South Africa following a successful stint overseas. Many supporters campaign for these players to come back home, as was the case with Benni McCarthy, Sibusiso Zuma, and most recently Steven Pienaar… But do we overvalue these players?
There have been many who have returned to Mzansi following a lucrative career overseas as they seek to secure one final pay cheque back home. McCarthy, Shaun Bartlett, Zuma, and Bradley Carnell are just a few examples of players who have done this.
However, it does not always work out, and sometimes these players are overvalued by the supporters as the memory of their greatness outweighs their actual greatness. One of our supporters, Malikuta, has taken time out to explain this to Supporters Club with an example.
"It's not always a case that when you come to SA from Europe you will be a gem. Dean Furman used to play very well for Bafana when he was in England, but now he has even lost his place in the Bafana line-up."
So, with this in mind, watch out how hard you campaign to have Pienaar or May Mahlangu in your side...
Why do some players fail and some players fly when they return home to Mzansi?
