Thabo Mngomeni has answered the remainder of your questions, and today he discusses the difference between his crop of players and today's generation, what's gone wrong Bafana Bafana, and his current involvement in football.
What made your generation of players special compared to the current crop? – chilly Boy
Thabo Mngomeni: We played with more passion and we believed in our ability, we weren't afraid to play our own game! Today, the players take too much instruction and are limited to playing in a certain way. There seems to be a lack of creativity in our football. No doubt that there are some players that might be more skilful than the players from my time, but they are afraid to show it, or sometimes they do it when it is not necessary.
What do you think went wrong with the national team, and how do you think we can overcome these challenges? – Mentashe
TM: Firstly, we need to develop our youth. Without having a proper development system, it will be very difficult to build a good national team. These days, it seems like it is easy to get into the South African squad; it's like if you play well against Pirates or Chiefs, a call-up is offered to you. There's too many factors that have played a part in Bafana's failures. We have great players in the country, so there needs to be good selections made if we want to see progress.
Are you involved in any football activities? – cialisto
TM: Yes. At the moment, I'm busy with Football for All, and with an initiative with the legends together with SAFA where we try to upgrade the football in our country.
