Lingering at the bottom half of the log standings puts any PSL team under tremendous pressure, and we can only imagine what the mood is like in Maritzburg United's camp.
Last season, the Pietermaritzburg-based outfit finished in 8th position. However, this time around, the team is facing the very real possibility of life in the National First Division next season. All is not over just yet for the Team of Choice, though, as they are level on points with Tuks, which means they could still land up in the play-offs.
However, the team will have some confidence going into Wednesday night's home fixture against the unpredictable Ajax Cape Town, having managed to keep Orlando Pirates at bay in their previous game.
"It's important for us to get the three points. I believe that our team will survive relegation," Pam, a Maritzburg United fan, said.
The fans have certainly not given up on the club, and still fully support them as they fight this battle out.
"We will always support the team, no matter the circumstances that the club faces," she added.
"It is a difficult time. I don't think we will get relegated. Even if it does happen, the players and the coaching staff must keep in mind that we will still be behind them in the NFD as well."
The race is on, and we will soon see who will plunge into the NFD between Maritzburg United, University of Pretoria and, possibly, Jomo Cosmos.
Do you think Maritzburg United will be relegated? Also, what do you think went wrong at the Team of Choice following their disappointing form this season?
