It was a heartbreaking scene for any Buccaneer supporter to see the outstretched hands of Felipe Ovono as they palmed a shot into the path of an oncoming Bidvest Wits player, an elementary error that has left Pirates out of the running for the first silverware of the season.
Many on the Ghost Ship were left heartsore when Ovono was transfer-listed by the club during the off-season. However, after this weekend's loss to the Students, it seems the supporters are singing a different tune.
"Ovono is costing Bucs; two games in a row, incredible for "best" goalkeepers. Average goalkeepers do make mistakes but not two games in a row, my foot!" – Peaceable_wa_Mabakabaka
"Mhlongo must come back. This is not on. Ovono is constantly making schoolboy errors that are costing the team. It's now two games in a row." – thato357
Then there are those who think it is down to the culture of the club, with many saying that Pirates have largely never been a club with an impressive goalkeeping record.
"Honestly! The only keepers I ever trusted in the Orlando Pirates jersey are William Okpara and Senzo Meyiwa. Others are nothing but clowns. But to be honest, at Chiefs, we can struggle with other positions, but when it comes to the goalkeeper department, we are blessed. Just take a look... From Patson Banda to Gary Bailey to Wade du Plessis to Botente Eshele to Brain Baloyi to Emile Baron to Arthur Bartman to Rowen Fernandez to Kabelo Metsimetsi to Itumeleng Khune to Reyaad Pieterse to Brilliant Khuzwayo. It's a blessing. Honestly!" – Honestkhosi
And then there are those who call for patience and understanding when it comes to the goalkeeping department at Pirates.
"Mostly, people who are now calling for Ovono's head are the same people who were crying for him not being given enough chance. Yes, he made mistakes from the 1-0 loss we had against Wits last season. He did the same against Arrows, and he wasn't convincing against Wits and made mistakes. But when we really look at Saturday's game, Wits was the better team and they won. So we cannot turn back the time or undo what is done. We're out of the MTN8 but we have a league and two more cups to try our luck. So let's support the team and forgive the boys. We are the Buccaneers and we will never stop loving our team. #Bucs forever!" – Lebstikano
