A star is coming home. Kagiso Dikgacoi, the Brandfort-born midfielder, has returned to South Africa and the race is on. At the moment, it looks like Golden Arrows lead the race for his signature, and this could be the best thing for our football.
I sincerely hope that KG makes the decision to join Arrows and not one of the so-called big three as this will be the best thing for our supporters and only make our league more interesting.
Back in the day, there were big players who played across all teams, and not just concentrated at the so-called big three.
Names that come to mind include Thabo Mngomeni, who spent most of his career at Umtata Bush Bucks, Tico-Tico Bucuane, who spent most of his career with Jomo Cosmos, George Koumantarakis, who never played for the big three but rather spent large parts his career with Manning Rangers and SuperSport United, or Lawrence "Sister Monica" Siyangaphi at Jomo Cosmos.
It would be a shame if KG were to join Sundowns and then we have yet another star on the bench. If our stars were spread over all teams, big and small, it would make our league more competitive and unpredictable, and the stadiums would be fuller as there would be giants going toe to toe in every game.
Of course, the money that Arrows may be offering will be less than what Downs can offer, but money shouldn't be everything. KG has already made his riches overseas, and Kwa-Zulu Natal is a nice, warm place to see out the rest of your playing days.
I have similar wishes regarding Steven Pienaar and Ajax Cape Town, but that is an issue for another day.
Do you agree? Should our star players be spread over more clubs?
