Over three months ago, I touched down in the Mother City for an internship here at Soccer Laduma. I was offered an opportunity to do a three-month experiential learning programme with the biggest soccer publication in the country, if not the whole of Africa.
I have definitely learned a lot during my stay here. It was my first time in the corporate world, and I am very thankful to the Soccer Laduma family for the opportunity. It has to be mentioned that, before coming here, I had a negative perception about the treatment of interns by their senior counterparts. I always thought interns were shoved around, bullied and all the nasty stuff you can ever imagine.
To my surprise, everyone in the office has treated me as one of them from the first day. My football knowledge has also expanded vastly from my first day here, my interactions with soccer players, supporters and other people involved in football have helped me become a better journalist, and even though there may have been a few mistakes here and there, it was all in the name of learning.
What I have learned about the corporate world, media specifically, is that, unlike in the business world, the 'customer' is not always right. Haha, just kidding, they always are.
Today is my last day here at the Laduma offices, and I am very grateful for the opportunity that was given to me. I would like to believe that I lived up to my expectations during my stay here. We have a new intern who arrived last week, and from what I've witnessed thus far, she will definitely fit in like a hand in a glove during her period here.
I would like to say goodbye to the Soccer Laduma family. It has been a life-changing three months for me, and I couldn't have asked for a warmer reception than the one I received here. As I'm leaving today, bear in mind that this will always be my home, and whatever the future might hold for me, there's no place better than home.
To everyone who has supported me through this wonderful chapter of my book, there is no me without you. And lastly, to everyone I've interacted with, be it a supporter, player, former player, coach, analyst – and not forgetting the wrong numbers I dialled and those who hung up on me – thank you for making this a story to tell… until next time.
