South African football can be a funny place at times. Look no further than Mamelodi Sundowns' league schedule to find out why it can be an unfair place. Sundowns currently find themselves competing in the Absa Premiership, the MTN8, and the CAF Champions League… all at once.
If there was any team that could absorb the pressure it is Sundowns, given the depth in their squad and their fitness under coach Pitso Mosimane. Such is the quality of the team that there are two fantastic players for every position, but even for a side of the Brazilians' calibre, their schedule is a bit bizarre.
Sundowns are set to play Maritzburg United on 14 September at the Harry Gwala Stadium, then play ZESCO United away on the 16th and then the MTN8 semi-final on the 21st...
This would all be fine if it weren't for the fact that Orlando Pirates were treated differently when they were competing in the CAF Champions league. They were afforded the luxury of having their league fixtures postponed, something that has not been given to Sundowns.
It seems slightly unfair and one wonders if having the chairman of a club as the chairman of the league is a source leads to a conflict of interest.
Do you agree with this? Are Sundowns being treated unfairly, or can you make sense of this?
