Over the years, South Africa has produced the cream of the crop when it came to our footballers. Football in South Africa had been a feast and everyone wanted a bite of it. However, these days we cannot say the same. Is our football slowly beginning to lose its spark?
As I recently ranted about the state of football in our country in my previous article on our local teams and the lack of ‘Kasi Flavour’ which was the backbone of the game in the heydays. It is rather sad to see how our soccer has become a bore to watch. Don’t get me wrong, we have top quality players but how many teams can we really say are crowd pullers? Not many is the answer!
To back up my statement, let us look at stadium attendance for example, when last have we seen our beautiful structures filled to capacity? Week in and week out, we are faced with a situation where a 40 000 seater stadium has a handful of supporters. To be frank, clubs cannot shift all the blame onto their fans for not pitching up to stadiums because when was the last time that we had eye-catching football, and I mean real eye-catching football which has you sitting at the edge of your seats and with your fingernails chewed right off?
It is about time that our clubs start pulling up their socks and bring back the days where games where filled with goals and not just lacklustre draws!
What are your thoughts on the level of football in the country?
