South Africans appear fearful in the face of the daunting task that lies ahead of our nation. Cameroon has selected a formidable force to face Bafana Bafana over the next two weeks. A Cameroonian squad that comprises of only one locally based player, the rest ply their trade in major leagues across the world. What does this say of Bafana?
To make matters worse, one of the few overseas based players that South Africa can field, Dino Ndlovu, recently had to withdraw from the squad due to injury. This left a void only to be filled by Ndumiso Mabena, there have been mixed reactions to this.
Many have asked why Coach Shakes Mashaba did not immediately go knocking on Kermit Erasmus’ door. Our Supporters were quick to point out the difference between Mabena and Erasmus;
“Mabena plays regularly and scores goals, while Erasmus debuted recently as a sub.” – Zinho_Mao1st
“Mabena deserves the call up, he is in amazing form this season.” – Nkemelang.
“Let’s see how things turn out for Erasmus in France before talking about his selection.” – Mthi-Luthuli
“The difference between Mabena and Erasmus is the latter has proven over past seasons that he can deliver… Mabena has been playing in the PSL for so many seasons but now (trying) to shine.” – Papa-Ona.
It seems then that the Erasmus, Mabena debate gives us a real dilemma:
Should we select our players based on what they have proven to us in the past? Or how they are playing now? This is a particularly tough decision when facing a team of Cameroon’s magnitude.
