Something has to change at Amakhosi There are certain player targets most agree on, but will the management of Naturena be able to acquire them? The supporters are calling for the likes of Sibusiso Vilakazi and Phakamani Mahlambi in a major squad overhaul, but how realistic is this? And has it been done before?
There have been repeated calls for the richest club in the league to stop wasting time and buy the best players in the PSL. It seems, for now, those players belong to the high-flying Bidvest Wits, and one Soccer Laduma website reader, Mxoh-2008, reckons Chiefs should sign two particular Students.
"They should go for (James) Keene and Vilakazi," he said.
The supporters are calling for a massive squad overhaul and a drastic spending spree. Furthermore, they know it is possible as a similar event occurred in 2012, when Amakhosi bought the shiniest new toys on the market.
This included the purchase of Morgan Gould for about R6 million from SuperSport United, Erick Mathoho from Bloemfontein Celtic for about R3 Million, Siyabonga Nkosi from Golden Arrows and Siboniso Gaxa from Lierse SK in Belgium. Another SL user, Zothani_Linda, picked up on this.
"In 2012, Chiefs bought Bafana Bafana without a back-up plan. Now they're going to buy Wits and his coach," he said.
This sentence refers to two things. First, the rumours that, if Steve Komphela's reign goes completely balls up, the Naturena club may just try to lure Clever Boys manager Gavin Hunt to their headquarters.
Secondly, the fact that buying big names may be a quick fix, but you need a back-up plan too as stars do age, eventually becoming weaker until you are left with the dying legs of a once-powerful and bright talent.
What are the chances of Hunt coaching Kaizer Chiefs next season? What are the chances of Chiefs making a big-money squad overhaul like they did in 2012?
