How Will The Cape Derby Affect Ajax Supporters?

This season will bring many new dynamics to the landscape of South African football. One of the most interesting is the creation of new team Cape Town City. This has got the Ajax fans talking ahead of the unveiling of their new players to supporters at Ikamva this weekend.

Supporters Club caught up with prominent Ajax fan and Supporters Club branch manager Sibongile Manga to get his take on the latest developments in Cape Town.

Beaver Nazo: Hey Manga, how are you doing?

Sibongile Manga: Hi, I'm all good sir, thank you.

BN: We are aware that Ajax are having a supporters day at Ikamva on Saturday, 20 August. Tell me, how is the communication between you (the supporters) and the team?

SM: At first, it was not perfect, there were a lot of things that we were not happy about, like the issue of Cecil Lolo, but now I'm happy to tell you that we are all at the same level in everything.

BN: Seeing that last season was not that good for the team, do the supporters still back the coach, Roger De Sa?

SM: We are 100% behind him, we are very happy with the progress of RDS. He has done tremendously well for the team since his arrival. Look at how many young boys he has promoted from our development.

BN: Speaking of development, are you happy with the number of players that are being promoted every season, or do you think there should be more?

SM: We are more than happy with the development and the promotions that are made, we are really happy to see these boys getting to the senior team. We go to the areas that other teams don't go to get these young payers and invest a lot of money in developing them.

BN: Tell me, do you think the arrival of Cape Town City will minimise your support?

SM: We are very happy that there's a new team in the Mother City as that means two things for us. 1) The big teams will come to our shores twice now instead of only coming to play us, so it means there will be more games for us. 2) There's going to be a Cape Derby now; you know the excitement the games of that nature brings to the supporters. So we are aware that there's going to be floor-crossing among the supporters.

BN: Thanks for your time, and good luck for the upcoming season.

SM: It's always a pleasure talking to you.

How do you think the Cape derby will affect Ajax's supporter base?
