Here Come The Underdogs

As we wait patiently for the 2016/17 season to kick off in August, it can be said that there promises to be many spoils waiting in the pipeline. The off-season has been a busy one, with clubs bolstering their squads and even changing locations, leaving us, the fans, wondering what the upcoming campaign will have in store for us, especially with the new blood in the PSL.

At the end of the previous campaign, we were introduced to two new candidates who joined the top flight after they proved their worth in the National First Division, Baroka FC and Highlands Park, and it seems like there is no club that will put a stop to these two teams as they embark on creating a beautiful football fantasy…

Baroka FC are no strangers to PSL giants who, in the past, have suffered against the Ga-Mphahlele club. A group of unknown, young players who wore their hearts on their sleeves first came about in 2007 and rose to fame when they participated in the 2010/11 Nedbank Cup challenge that saw them beat the likes of Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs, making many look up and notice the then Vodacom League club.

From then, there has been a rapid growth in the performances of the team as they continued to give the PSL teams nightmares in the Nedbank Cup and rose from league-to-league and, today, as they wait to take on the top flight, we look forward to the tricks they will pull out of the hat.

The Lions of the North are back to give their opponents a run for their money. Highlands Park made a great comeback as they managed to defeat the likes of Mbombela United and Tuks. With the recent unveiling of their new recruits, there is a renewed optimism with some interesting fixtures ahead.

There is no doubt that these two clubs are here to leave a mark, and the giants of the PSL will be looking over their shoulders!

What are your thoughts on both Baroka FC and Highlands Park being in the ABSA Premiership?
