Mamelodi Sundowns seem to be bright star in the dark night of South African football at the moment. It is not often we get to look upon continental competitions with pride, but Sundowns have come out strong after a 2-1 victory over Zamalek away from home on Sunday night. Let’s hope the boys keep marching on.
Goals from Tiyani Mabunda and Khama Billiat ensured the Brazilians left Egypt with three points, and the Supporters Club would like to extend a massive congratulations to the team for what they have done so far.
Most supporters did not see Sundowns making it past the first game. In fact, very few South African teams ever do make it past the first game, most actually give up before the match has even begun. So, from that angle, congratulations Downs and thank you for actually competing on behalf of South Africa.
Two exits and one reinstatement have got Downs to where they are now, and they could not have found themselves in a tougher group. With so many former champions and African footballing powerhouses, a slaughter was expected by most.
However, the boys came to the party. So far the performances have been nothing short of impressive, and even if Sundowns were to exit tomorrow, I think Mzansi can still look upon the Brazilians with pride.
Unfortunately, most of our teams overestimate the opposition so much that they don't even rock up to the game (sometimes literally), but Sundowns have shown no fear, and have now given us hope that they are not in the competition just to fill up the numbers.
Keep moving and grinding forward, Kabo Yellow, South Africa stands behind you!
