I think the question that comes to the mind of every South African football follower when it comes to our national team, Bafana Bafana is, is it because we lack playing personnel or is it the criteria that is used for selection of players that is letting us down?
Well it’s not easy to tell when you don’t even understand the vision, I mean we kept hearing our Coach Bra Shakes telling us about vision 2022, and he dropped some regulars like Bernard Parker, Tsepo Masilela, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, and many others, citing that its due to their age and that he doesn’t see them getting to 2022, which was a good and fair enough point from him especially if he is trying to build for that but we have some over 30 year old players in our squad. That is the confusing part.
The supporters have been pointing the fingers at the man at the helm, Bra Shakes Mashaba with many pointing out the fact that he fought with the likes of Kermit Erasmus and Kamohelo Mokotjo as the reason for blaming him. If you look at these two incidents, Erasmus was Pirates’ leading marksman but his understudy, Thamsanqa Gabuza was always selected ahead of him, while Kamohelo Mokotjo was voted the best midfielder of the season two seasons in a row in Holland’s Eerste Divisie. That has made a lot of those who follow Bafana Bafana’s progress question Bra Shakes’ selection criteria. Even recently he selected Brighton Mhlongo and his understudy, Jackson Mabokgwane while we have a lot of young and talented keepers in the PSL that should be in line for the 2018 World cup.
Failing to qualify for the 2018 World cup won’t do any justice to the nation and I hope that Bra Shakes knows that. My plea to him is that, select players on merit not on certain sentiments or we will be on a decline forever. He surely doesn’t want to be seen as someone who is an Architect of his own demise!
