South Africans and sport share a volatile relationship. The one minute we love our sportsman, the next they are sports villains. This past weekend saw Bafana Bafana overcome the odds to beat Senegal 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier. However, many have still only seen the dark side to this.
A massive contributing factor to the victory was a dubious penalty awarded to the hosts, South Africa. As we gather the reactions to the game this weekend it is clear that many supporters have made that penalty decision the focal point. Leading to the question; do South African supporters complain too much?
“Y'all people complain about anything and everything. It doesn't rain, you complain. It rains, you complain. It's cold, you complain. The sun shines brightly, you complain. You have no job, you complain. You get a job, you complain of getting paid "peanuts". Bafana loses, you complain. Bafana wins, you say it's friendlies. Bafana draw, you demand a win. Bafana beat Malawi, you say it's a small team. Bafana lose to Zimbabwe, you lament our players for losing to a small team. Bafana beat Spain, you say it wasn't an important game. Bafana get hammered by Brazil, you moan. Pirates dumped out of CAF competition, you moan about refereeing. Sundowns win CCL Final, you applaud the referees. Bafana win an important clash, you say it's favors. Why don't you guys just go enjoy your moruba or diketo elsewhere?” – Matome_Kay
“Banana Bafana won - ask yourself do u want to go Russia or on not? If not then the South Africans should appeal that penalty and say we as south African we feel that we don't deserve that opportunity handed over by the ref please kindly cancel the goal and give us that penalty of Serero (when he was tackled in the box and the penalty wasn't given). How many times has the nation suffered from bad ref decisions, yes it was not a penalty but it was given. Eish when you are used to loosing you don't even see you have won. Victory is victory.” – Lord of Football
What is your opinion? Are South Africans too quick to complain about sport?
