There are two tales in South African football currently. One of Cape Town City, a new team with great ambitions, undefeated this month and in their first cup final after five months of existence. The other is Orlando Pirates, cupless, and coachless. What do they have in common? Eric Tinkler…
Tinkler was relieved of his services as Pirates head coach towards the end of last season as they wanted a "sure bet" in the form of Muhsin Ertugral for the sake of the club's 80th birthday celebrations.
However, Tinkler's fortunes have only gone skywards, and Pirates' in the opposite direction, since the two parties parted ways. The supporters discuss what is at play here, and if the inner workings at Pirates are more complicated than we can ever know.
"(Tinkler) matured so quickly, he must thank Irvin Khoza for giving him a chance because no one else was gonna trust him #all the best in the final. Bring it to Cape people." – Ayandamdladla
"Congratulations to City yet again, it seems like most SA players and coaches perform much better when the pressure is less." – Bucs_10
"No matter what, I don't care about Tinkler, what he is doing. I still want him (Tinkler) to answer this question: Why didn't he use Gumede and Majoro regularly at Pirates, but now he believes in them week in week out at CTC?" – LeCowHloHlo
"It shows that his hands were tied at Pirates. Who knows, maybe it's Tebogo (Moloi) who was selecting the starting XI. If Tinkler wasn't good enough for Pirates, why is he doing good with CTC?" – Imanald Khosified
"Tinkler has never been a bad coach. He took Bucs to two finals, pity he never got support from management. Something made Muhsin decide to resign." – Thula-Bucs
"Tinkler is just proving that Pirates made a mistake in axing him. But I blame the fans for not giving him a chance, him and Roger (De Sa). Just imagine, by now, how they would be like had they continued after going till four cup finals in a season!" – siyandat
"I would say Pirates have made a big mistake in letting Tinkler go if he beats SSU in the TKO." – Stillnas
Do you think Pirates regret letting Tinkler go? Why is his current side more successful than Pirates are at the moment?
