With Benni McCarthy being released from Belgian club Sint-Truiden as assistant coach after agreeing to stay at the club until the end of the current season, one wonders where he will be plying his trade come next season. Could he join the Buccaneers?
The relationship between Benni and the Mayfair-based team has grown stronger over the years, with Irvin Khoza being the man who gave the striker a chance to end his career in South Africa, and he certainly terrorised PSL opponents.
Since McCarthy retired from the beautiful game, it has continuously been rumoured that the Cape Town-born legend will one day return to the Buccaneers' ship, this time as part of the technical staff. And now, having acquired his FIFA coaching licence, fuel has been added to the already burning fire!
Firstly, we need to look at whether Benni could make the grade, and be able to coach a team as mighty as Orlando Pirates. He has a wealth experience gained from leagues he has played in as well as being coached by the best managers in the world, including a certain Jose Mourinho.
However, this does not guarantee that he will be the best of coaches as he has little experience in the coaching department, but, then again, only time will tell…
When he was part of the Orlando Pirates set-up, many of the players would speak of the conversations McCarthy would have with them, and how he would encourage them going into fixtures, this shows that he does have some leadership and motivational characteristics in him.
If Benni does get appointed by Pirates, then what happens to Eric Tinkler? Does he stay on as head coach, with Benni as his assistant? This could be seen as the Buccaneers shooting themselves in the foot as we all know of the relationship between Tinkler, McCarthy and ex Bucs coach Roger De Sa, which resulted in a few altercations during Benni's playing stint at Mayfair. Having the two previous Bafana Bafana internationals on the bench would be a great combination... if they get along!
With Tinkler's questionable decision-making, the addition of McCarthy could be the putty to seal the cracks in the Pirates ship. With the club's fans gunning to have their favourite man back at Mayfair, and with Tinkler's future in doubt, Benni may indeed soon be back on the bench!
Do you think Benni should take over the reins at Orlando Pirates?
