It has begun! The 2016/17 PSL season is upon us. Tuesday night saw the first round of fixtures kick off the new campaign. Among the opening results was a promising 2-1 victory for Chippa United, at the expense of Free State Stars. It seems the future is bright for the Chilli Boys.
Supporters Club caught up with a former Moroka Swallows supporter who has since converted to the Chilli Boys, Jeff Ngema.
Nikolaos Kirkinis: Hi Jeff! So we hear you are no longer a Dube Bird?
Jeff Ngema: Hi Nik. No I am not, I have suffered enough from that team. I cannot trust them, and I hear they are not even registered for the lower league this season, so it's pointless supporting them.
NK: So if you no longer follow the Birds, who do you support now?
JN: The Chilli Boys, Chippa United – now that's what I call football.
NK: Of all the teams in South Africa, why them?
JN: Have you seen them play? It is beautiful, it is poetry. Dan "Dance" (Malesela, Chippa United's coach) is so great. They play in such a way that reminds me of my youth, growing up and watching the old Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Swallows. It is football that is good for the customer, it's quick, passing football. They move quickly to the goal and you can feel they play with the same passion that Dan Dances with. (laughs)
NK: So what are you expecting from them this season?
JN: Only great things. They used to be a struggling team but now they are flying. They finished sixth last season, so I am looking for any improvement, any place fourth or higher would be great. I think anything is possible for this team. We are the only ones who embody flavoursome football these days! (laughs)
Can Chippa United be league contenders this season? Do you agree that they play entertaining football?
