History is in the making today! Tonight brings the first ever Cape Town derby between Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City. It will also be the first Cape Town derby since Santos were relegated in 2012. The supporters are gearing up for this affair, and no one is quite sure what to expect.
Although Cape Town City has only been in existence for about six games, they have actually amassed a fan base, mostly consisting of new and curious supporters looking for a PSL team to back this season. Credit must also go to some cunning marketing on the part of owner John Comitis and his team.
Supporters Club caught up with Cape Town City fan Chris Willows, who has been rallying to get people behind the team.
"I don't fully know why I got involved in this team. I just saw something new and I thought it would be a good idea to get involved in a team with a clean slate and be involved in them from the start. It's a new prospect and very exciting. I also really like their branding and their marketing, they have made the team look attractive," he said.
"I am going to the game today, I have got about 100 friends to come as well. I managed to get through to John Comitis and he called me and said he would give us a big flag to take to the game. We are very excited, for a couple guys it will be their first ever PSL game. Hopefully this is a tradition that can continue. I predict a 3-1 win for CTC."
Anything that brings supporters to the stadium is a good thing, so we commend Chris and CTC for reviving interest in the beautiful game in South Africa.
Do you think this match will be the start of a ferocious derby?
