South Africans have awoken this morning with a lump in their throats. Our darling U23 Football team will be on the early flight home from Brazil as the tournament hopes ended with a 1-1 draw last night. Imaginably, the only people more crushed than the supporters are the players themselves.
It is a difficult time. Everyone is in a state of heart ache and the long knives are out. Many have called for coach Da Gama to step down.
“They boys are talented. It’s a pity that they are coachless.” – djdont1
There are others however that have leapt to the defense of the coach and the team, many saying that these things are a part of the game of football and our performances were valiant.
“Stop blaming the team and coach as well. The last time we participated in the competition was 16 years ago.” – tpmokuppo
Most of the criticism has been leveled against the two included overage players; Erick Mathoho and Itumeleng Khune..
“Freedom of speech sometimes achieves the opposite of its desired effect, some people use this opportunity to irrationally put down other people. Khune is like everyone else, he honored the national call up and did his best like everyone else. Contrary to what people say, he was easily the best player.” – Cardosso.
