Here at Supporters Club, we enjoy giving our readers a platform to express their opinions and share their views regarding the beautiful game. Today, we hear from Soca263 on which player he thought should have bagged the prestigious African CAF Player of the Year award.
"Without taking anything from Ugandan goalie Denis Onyango, who was surprisingly crowned the best African player based in Africa for 2016, ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns teammate and Zimbabwean star, Khama Billiat.
"There is no doubt that Onyango was outstanding in Uganda's historical maiden qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations 2017 competition. But to be voted the best in Africa ahead of Billiat, who scooped all the top awards in the 2015/16 season in the same league that Onyango plays in, is beyond logic.
"The snubbing of Billiat of the award he rightfully deserved exposed the regional politics within the Africa football body (CAF).
"The Zimbabwean's vote was hugely let down in the final voting phase, where the CAF media committee, comprised mostly of West African media personnel, could vote.
"The imbalance of the CAF media committee should be reviewed and levelled accordingly to avoid devaluing the continent's top awards. Players must be awarded based on merit, not favouritism."
