Baroka Ba-Rocking The Boat

The pessimists were plenty, the naysayers were near, and the doomsday forecasters saw nothing but darkness for all NFD teams in the Nedbank Cup, but Baroka FC now find themselves in the semi-final – all congratulations to them, and well done for showing up the big boys…

There are two interesting stories to be told about this Nedbank Cup so far: the first is the tale of Mamelodi Sundowns, and the second is that of Baroka FC. Sundowns crashed out of the tournament after a 2-0 loss to Orlando Pirates this weekend. The interesting thing about this is that Pirates were the first Premiership team the Brazilians had faced in the tournament; up until that point, they had had a pretty easy ride.

Baroka FC, on the other hand, have had to punch above their weight to get to where they are. They defeated teams such as Chippa United, Golden Arrows, and, most recently, Polokwane City. They have shown they can rumble with the big boys, and won't be in the PSL next year to merely make up numbers if they do get promoted.

Whether they can actually go all the way in the tournament or not remains to be seen. It is certainly exciting, as a football supporter, knowing there is a new underdog in town.

For me, it is always a beautiful thing when the link between money and football gets broken, as is the case with Leicester City in England, and this weekend's results were a beautiful victory for the underdog, and therefore a beautiful victory for Baroka…

Let's see if history can be made…

What do you think of Baroka's chances of progressing to the final? What are their chances in the PSL next year?
