In today's edition of Supporters Club Did You Know, we bring you the story of a staunch Afrikaans man who became the first white footballer to play for Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows, and Kaizer Chiefs.
His name was Phil Venter and his father reportedly did not talk to him for two years after he joined Orlando Pirates in 1978. Here's what he had to say about the difference in the way muti was used at Pirates and at Swallows: "It was scary going into the townships to play, but the atmosphere in those stadiums is something I will always cherish. I participated in the muti ceremonies. At Orlando it was big, but unlike Swallows, we didn't have our skins cut. There was a guy somewhere in the township who used to hit us with sticks and do all sorts of funny things to us."
