Once in a while, here in Supporters Club, we give our Get Published writers a chance to voice their opinions, and one of them, dribblingwizard35, has written a brilliant open letter to our Amaglug-glug team.
"This letter is written with all the brotherly love to my young brothers, including the two not-so-young brothers in the U23 squad currently hoisting the Rainbow Nation flag in the exotic city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
"I am sure after your gutsy performance last evening against the hosts, your social media timelines have been bombarded with messages of praise. You played 30 minutes with a man short after one of your own was sent for an early shower for a second bookable offence. This would have been enough to dampen your spirit but you young lions fought on to hold the hosts to a goalless draw, who boasted among their playing personnel a certain Neymar Jr.
"As much as big brother is proud of you, he is not writing as part of your cheerleading club but to bring you back to reality. I have been here before; in the year 2000 I took my dice game, earned R50, and placed a bet on the then team representing us in Sydney, Australia. They had in their group Japan, Slovakia and the 'mighty' Brazil. After the group phase, they were on an SAA flight back home after losing to Japan and Slovakia, but convincingly beat Brazil 3-1. So I do not want you to commit the same mistakes as them. A good performance against Brazil is not everything, you still need good results against Denmark and Iraq.
"Let's meet at OR Tambo later this month with your gold medals and trophy."
