The Beaver is back again with Beaver's Blog. This week I take a look at the similarities between the 1995 and 2016 PSL seasons.
Although, in 1995, the league was called the NSL, it was still the top flight of South African football, which is now called the PSL.
Here are some interesting similarities between the 1995 and 2016 seasons:
In both seasons, Bidvest Wits beat big guns to a Top 8 crown, and both teams won the CAF Champions League. In 1995, Wits beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 in the final to win the BP Top 8 Cup; in 2016, Wits beat Mamelodi Sundowns 3-0 in the final to win the MTN8 Cup.
In 1995, Pirates lost 1-0 to Wits in the Coca-Cola Cup final and went on to the 1995 CAF Champions league; in 2016, Mamelodi Sundowns lost 3-0 in the MTN8 final to Bidvest Wits and went on to win the CAF Champions League.
In both seasons, Cape Town team played against a Pretoria team in a cup final. In 1995, Cape Town Spurs played the BobSave Super Bowl final against Pretoria's Pretoria City; in 2016, Cape Town City will play Pretoria's SuperSport United in the Telkom Knockout final in the previous few years.
In both seasons, Kaizer Chiefs struggled after losing players. In 1995, Amakhosi had their worst season ever after losing players like Shoes Moshoeu, Fani Madida and Lucas Radebe to clubs in Turkey and England, respectively; in 2016, Chiefs are struggling to get positive results after losing players such as Tefu Mashamaite, Mandla Masango and Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the previous few years.
What do you think of these similarities?
