It was a weekend filled with interesting results on both ends of the DStv Premiership table, with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, in particular, dropping points as the race for second spot gains momentum.
All eyes were on the action at Athlone Stadium down in the Mother City as Cape Town City hosted the Glamour Boys on Saturday, but the sold-out affair produced no goals as both sides shared the spoils in an end-to-end affair. Both coaches will feel disappointed. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers were on the end of a 2-1 defeat by a Sekhukhune United side in red-hot form. After Lehlohonolo Seema’s men took a 2-0 lead, it was always going to be difficult for the men in Black & White to salvage something out of the game, and indeed Tshegofatso Mabasa’s strike proved nothing more than a consolation.
Cape Town Spurs have been on somewhat of a resurgence under Ernst Middendorp, but suffered a big setback with a last-gasp 1-0 loss to fellow strugglers Moroka Swallows, at home nogal. This ended a 13-game winless run by the Dube Birds, who will be looking to finish the season strong and move away from the drop zone.
Stellenbosch FC salvaged some pride for the Cape outfits and leapt to second spot after thrashing a hapless Royal AM 3-0. Goals came from Devin Titus, a Siphesihle Msomi own goal and Iqraam Rayners.
In a KZN Derby, Golden Arrows downed Richards Bay FC 2-1 as they continued with their upward trajectory since Steve Komphela took over as head coach. Abafana Bes’thende now sit inside the Top Eight bracket, while Bay remain in 15th place.
