Argentine midfielder Matias Esquivel has said his goodbyes to Club Lanus, with the player set to begin a new journey in South Africa at Mamelodi Sundowns.
The 24-year-old is set to join the DStv Premiership champions ahead of the resumption of the 2023/24 season, with various overseas reports indicating that Downs paid R45.8 million for their newest South American star.
Esquivel came through the Lanus academy ranks and was promoted to their first team in 2020, making 95 appearances and scoring seven goals and contributed 12 assists.
Here's how the readers reacted to the "Sundowns' Big Money Recruit Bids Emotional Farewell" story:
"The figures mentioned are exaggerated there's no proof of that. It doesn't make any business sense to spend more than what you are actually playing for, they are just cooking false stories," says tm194441.
"Sundowns FC has spoken many times that their focus is not in the 70s and 80s, where every club wanted to dominate local football.
"The club made it clear that they want to dominate Africa and participate against world's best. To compete at that level, you need to be serious and spend wisely," lombosngoepe.
"Sundowns is on a mission," says makausemakause53.
"Welcome home boy, in the next four months, you will be a DStv Premiership champion," says jimmyntjana20.
"Where is FFP in South African football," says Sir_Zovic.
"Because he can afford to, maybe Motsepe should consider buying status in one of the leagues overseas. Maybe Belgium or even in the Scandinavian countries and Sundowns can be a major feeder of that team.
South Africa have kept their Africa Cup of Nations dreams alive after an emphatic 4-0 win over COSAFA neighbours Namibia, in a Group E match played at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo on Sunday night.
Al Ahly's Percy Tau opened the scoring from the spot before Sundowns skipper Themba Zwane added two memorable goals, as Bafana Bafana eased past the Brave Warriors, effectively wrapping up the game in the first half.
Sundowns youngster Thapelo Maseko added a fourth in the second half to round out a clinical display from Hugo Broos' men.
The result sees Bafana rise to second place in Group E with three points, one behind leaders Mali, with Namibia dropping to third place sitting on three points, and Bafana's next opponents, Tunisia rounding out the group with one point.
Here's how the readers reacted to the "Bafana Thrash Namibia To Boost Knockout Hopes" story:
"Thank you Bafana Bafana for making the nation proud. Thank you Themba Zwane for a meticulous performance, thank you Percy Tau showing bravery against all odds. Thanks to Teboho Mokoena for conducting that midfield like an orchestra.
"And lastly, thank you to the team for a great effort. I'm a South African patriot. Khosi I remain," says ncwanesizwe.
"Makgopa might not be scoring goals but his overall contribution is immense to the team. Well done boys for a very important victory," says Downs rule.
"Supported member and I know some will not agree with us because they believe a striker is only measured by goals scored forgetting the assists. Another good similar example was displayed in the 2018 French squad that won the World cup, in that squad their target man was Oliver Giraud who did not score a single goal in the whole tournament but played all the matches.." replies MjBee.
"Well done Bafana Bafana, you did make us proud yesterday, but please, the next game we must make sure we don't start slow, Namibia could have scored 3 goals before us. I'm a Khosi supporter but my favourite player yesterday was Mshishi," says pmnaanyane.
"Yes it is good but at the same time a bit of a waste to buy a player for the money spent on all the tournaments that South Africa has and a change on top ," says ghettovillage411.
"Welcome to the house of medals, you will be happy," says magingamkhasibe.
"It is good for Sundowns to sign any player they want and it's very easy for the player to adjust to a team that is doing well, unlike at Chiefs and Pirates, I think it is best for the Soweto teams to look local rather than wasting a lot of money on a player that will not add value, then when they start doing well, they can start looking overseas," says Fair Comment.
"Welcome to the home of champions," says Saavedra.
