Kaizer Chiefs have been looking at strengthening their defensive line with various options and they're now monitoring a South African solution, the Siya crew has been informed.

Siya sources close to the matter have indicated that Chiefs are considering making changes at the back by bringing in SuperSport United player Kegan Johannes.

The sources have added that Amakhosi have been following Johannes' progress and that they may believe he could fit in well.

"The club is interested in Kegan (Johannes). They have been monitoring him for some time now and they would really want to have him at the start of next season. Even last season before signing Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe and even Luke Fleurs, they wanted Johannes but they could not get him and that's why he is back on the radar now," the source told Soccer Laduma.

A second Siya source discussed that in order for Chiefs to bring in Johannes they would then have to let go of some players, mainly in their defensive department.

"It's true they want Kegan (Johannes) but they are also looking at releasing some players in the team so that they can open up some space for new arrivals. They don't want to have too big a squad which will have problems.

"They need to maintain order and happiness among players for them to perform. So some players will be released at the end of the season before they can bring in players like Johannes," the source added.

Soccer Laduma contacted SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews on whether Chiefs have approached them for their player.

"Kegan is still contracted with us and chiefs only take our defenders when they are free so he won’t be going there," Matthews told Soccer Laduma in a joking manner, knowing that while the Glamour Boys do target players out of contract, they actually also make an exception for certain players.

That means a move for Johannes cannot be entirely ruled out at this point.

Soccer Laduma contacted Amakhosi for comment but no response was received by the time this story was published.
