With Cassius Mailula appearing to be having some way to go before he can start playing regularly at Major League Soccer side Toronto, the choice of him signing there has been questioned.

Mailula, 22, joined Toronto last year from Mamelodi Sundowns in what was understood to be a multimillion-rand deal, having done exceptionally for the Chloorkop outfit in a short space of time at senior level.

Toronto FC coach John Herdman hinted recently that Mailula is likely to continue missing out on regular action due to the experienced trio of Lorenzo Insigne, Federico Bernardeschi and Jonathan Osorio playing ahead of him.

Because of his lack of game time, Mailula has already lost his place in the Bafana Bafana squad and missed out at the recent Africa Cup of Nations as coach Hugo Broos prefers selecting players who are playing regularly for their clubs.

Ike Pula, who is a Sundowns’ provincial scout in Limpopo and one of the coaches credited for Mailula’s discovery as a youngster, questioned the MLS standard in discussing the player’s situation.

“I think it was early for him to move, especially to that league. I’m not sure how competitive that league is. To me, it seems to be a league that is still trying to attract big-name players from all over the world. It’s like a building phase of some sort towards what they are trying to do these days. I think even our league is better than theirs in terms of competitiveness. I think it’s a league that is mostly boosted by players from other leagues,” said Pula, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.
