Mamelodi Sundowns' Thapelo Morena has evolved into a utility player since joining the club in 2016 from the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic.

Initially signed as a defender, Morena's adaptability under coaches Pitso Mosimane and Rulani Mokwena has seen him excel in various roles, including winger and centre-forward, showcasing his speed and scoring prowess, most recently in a 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United.

Morena's admiration for Manchester City's Kyle Walker is no secret, citing the England international's aggression and footballing attributes as inspirational.

“For me, to be honest it was Kyle Walker, as for me he has all the attributes of a footballer. He is aggressive, speedy, he can read the game well and for now as playing in attack it’s (Phil) Foden and (Jeremy) Doku,” Morena told Marawa Sports Worldwide.

In the era of modern football, where wingers play a pivotal role, Sundowns have embraced this trend, with players like Morena studying the game's best in European club football, including Liverpool's Luis Diaz and City's Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva. Morena notes the impact of such players on his game.

“When he comes in the second half, he does crazy things and he has like maybe 11 successful one-versus-ones. For most of the wingers, yes, Doku, Silva, Grealish, Diaz from Liverpool,” Morena said.

The comprehensive analysis by Sundowns' technical team has significantly contributed to Morena's development, transforming him from a promising talent at Celtic to a seasoned professional capable of reading the game with greater depth. Despite being a Liverpool fan, Morena believes his style of play aligns more closely with Manchester City and Arsenal, hinting at potential future moves.

“It is beneficial because you improve as a player. When you look at me now and let me say nine years back when I was still at (Bloemfontein) Celtic, I’m a completely different player and I can read the game more than I used to, I can see situations,” Morena said.

“I think to be honest, I’m a Liverpool fan but due to the style of play we also play at Sundowns, Arsenal and Man City, I think they would be the teams I can easily try and get into,” Morena added, highlighting his ambition and the influence of Sundowns' playing style on his career trajectory.
