The rumour mill has never quietened regarding Mamelodi Sundowns' quest for a new striker. Cape Town City's Khanyisa Mayo is the player who has mostly been tipped to strengthen Masandawana's forward line, if the Brazilians are able to eventually prize him away.
But Bennett Mnguni, the former Sundowns midfield maestro with the club's DNA coursing through his veins, cuts through the speculation when talking to Soccer Laduma in an exclusive interview.

"New striker for what? Sundowns don't need another striker. As a team we are fine with what we have. You know we have Peter Shalulile. Oh yeah that boy is out of this world. If you have a striker like Shalulile you know you can win things with him. He is a utility player. How many strikers do you know who defend as well as Shalulile does? One minute he is attacking and the next minute he is defending. He is committed to the team and that's all we need as a team. We don't need a new striker at all," Mnguni told the Siya crew.
For Mnguni, Shalulile isn't just a striker; he's a one-man show, a maestro that also conducts the Downs attack. The supporting cast, Mnguni insists, are worthy to support him.
"So you see apart from just Shalulile the support system he has from other forward players is very good. If we have players like (Themba) Zwane and (Lucas) Ribeiro (Costa) then we are good. That's why I am saying at the moment we really don't need another striker. Let's work with what we have and get the best out of them. They are the best attacking players in the league at the moment. Why would you want a new striker. For what?" Mnguni wondered.
Sundowns have already proven to be the best team in the league so far this season, and having won the African Football League, there may be an argument to say that head coach Rulani Mokwena shouldn't change a winning formula.
