Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Manqoba Mngqithi has responded to criticism from sections of supporters who believe he's in a comfort zone at the club and should seek a new challenge as a head coach elsewhere.

Mngqithi was previously a co-coach with Rulani Mokwena, while Steve Komphela completed the coaching setup as a senior coach.

However, the Brazilians dismantled that arrangement in October last year, as they made Mokwena the sole head coach and demoted Mngqithi to a senior coach role while Komphela was made assistant.

Ahead of the 2023/24 season, with reports that Mokwena wanted his own hand-picked backroom staff, Komphela found a new challenge after he joined Moroka Swallows as their head coach and supporters have been suggesting that Mngqithi, who is now the assistant coach, should also find a new challenge and be a head coach elsewhere.

The 52-year old tactician says people are entitled to their opinion but given his experience in the game, he won't be making decisions just because they appear popular.

"So, when I'm at this stage of my career and someone thinks I'm scared of going out, I'm in a comfort zone and all that, it's right for someone to think what he wants to think," Mngqithi said in the MTN8 final press conference.

"When you're a coach and want to be successful as a coach it's important that you have very thick skin, because if you listen to what everybody says about you, you might go out of the rails.

"Because most of the time, maybe it is an advise to you as well, popular decisions are the wrong decisions. When people say 'Do this' you have to sit back and ask yourself what is it that they want to see?" he said.

Mngqithi went on and explained that one of his strengths as a human being is that he's not emotional and will make the decision to leave Sundowns when the time is right.

"Because at times what sounds so popular and so interesting, is so wrong. So me as a human being I use my brains, I don't use my emotions. I'm sure that's one of the strengths I have as a human being, I'm not emotional," he continued.

"I look at everything and all angles and make my decision when the time is right and when I make that decision (to leave Sundowns), I won't be expecting people to clap hands because it will be my decision," he added.
