With Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune on a mission to restore his image and to avoid having one of the worst seasons of his career with the chance that he has been given in the team, the general feeling in the fraternity is that goalkeepers haven’t been great in the 2020/21 campaign due to inconsistent performances.

Khune has been under immense pressure after making some big errors which have cost Chiefs vital points, although head coach Gavin Hunt has showed faith in the experienced shot-stopper by keeping him in the starting line-up in the last two league matches and in the recent CAF Champions League fixture against Horoya.

Khune has come under huge criticism from the fans for his recent performances and it might take the former Bafana Bafana number one some notable match-winning moments to restore the faith, if he manages to keep his place in Hunt’s line-ups, in the remaining matches of the season.

Meanwhile, Chiefs’ rivals Orlando Pirates have had goalkeeping issues of their own as the highly-rated Ghanaian shot-stopper, Richard Ofori has conceded some questionable goals, despite being signed from Maritzburg United to solve the goalkeeping concerns at the Buccaneers.

As a result, Pirates are still linked with SuperSport United number one and captain Ronwen Williams, who has been the club’s long-term target.

Former Cape Town City goalkeeper, Shu-Aib Walters, is disappointed with the goalkeeping standards in the DStv Premiership this season.

From the 16 teams in the top-flight, Walters says he has been impressed with only two goalkeepers, namely, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Denis Onyango and Ronwen Williams of SuperSport United, while the likes of Chiefs’ Daniel Akpeyi and Virgil Vries from Swallows have had their moments.

“I’m going to be honest; I don’t think I will even reach to five because I will be very critical. Yes, Denis has always been a seasoned campaigner and has been brilliant and is very consistent. He has been very fortunate because he is in a team that has not really dipped in form,” said Walters.

“The only other consistent person is Ronwen Williams. Those are the only two that have looked really good,” he said.

The former Bafana Bafana keeper says he has also been monitoring the progress of Vries at the Dube Birds and has not been unimpressed.

“Virgil Vries hasn’t really been winning matches for Swallows as the team has been doing well and have not been losing matches and he’s doing consistently well and he probably deserves a Namibia national team call-up,” added Walters.
