Retired goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo, who spent years at Kaizer Chiefs, has opened up on his time at Naturena, and playing second fiddle to club legend, Itumeleng Khune.

Even when the star figure lacked form, he would still be preferred and Khuzwayo believes he would at times play when he didn’t earn the right to be in the line-up.

“If you remember correctly, the last time Chiefs won a trophy it was the MTN8 and then the league, I was in goal. But the supporters were so glued that they still wanted ‘Itu’ but the numbers were not adding up,” Khuzwayo said on Gagasi FM show

“He was the favourite and sometimes there was injustice that happened in terms of him getting the number one when he didn’t work hard to get number one,” added Khuzwayo.

Having spend six seasons at the Glamour Boys, the now-retired shot-stopper added the reason he left the club was because he was in the shadow of Khune and treated like a ‘side chick’.

Interestingly, after leaving the Amakhosi, Khuzwayo joined rivals Orlando Pirates, but never played an official match for them and eventually called time on his career following trouble with injury.

“One of the downfalls of Chiefs, which is why I left Chiefs, I was like a side chick at Chiefs, knowing very well that he (Khune) is going to be there,” Khuzwayo said.

Undoubtedly, Khuzwayo’s stand-out moment for the Amakhosi was in the 2014/15 season where he featured 16 times and helped the club to the League title and MTN8.
