The competition provided an opportunity for teams finishing in third or fourth place and those who have won their respective FA Cups a shot at continental glory - for South African teams in particular, finishing third or fourth, as well as winning the Nedbank Cup would land you this honour.

As things stand, Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United occupy CAF Confederations Cup slots for next season.

However, reports in North Africa had alleged that the competition could no longer be in operation from the 2025/26 season.
