Manchester United have reportedly struck a verbal agreement with a 2022 FIFA World Cup star, who is viewed as Cristiano Ronaldo's replacement, ahead of the January transfer window.
Ronaldo Offered Big Money To Leave Europe
According to Football Insider, the Red Devils are closing in on the signature of Netherlands and PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo.
The winger, who has also played up front at international and club level, has carried his impressive domestic form into the showpiece in Qatar, scoring two goals in his first two matches.
United were said to have had a bid for his services rejected at the start of the 2022/23 campaign before deciding to splash big money on Ajax Amsterdam and Brazil winger Antony instead.
It is believed the 20-time English giants have kept in contact with the player's camp in recent months, and are hopeful of striking a deal with PSV next year, but whether or not the Eredivisie club will sell him in January remains unknown.
Multiple reports suggest that Dutch manager Erik ten Hag would prefer to bring Gakpo to Old Trafford in the coming transfer window, with it claimed a deal could cost United more than €50 million (R894 million).
The forward would likely fill the void left by Ronaldo, who departed the Premier League giants as a free agent last week following his explosive interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan.

Gakpo has contributed to 30 goals in just 24 matches for PSV so far this season, and has netted five times in 11 appearances for his nation.
