With the Glazer family recently putting Manchester United up for sale, a frontrunner for the English giants has now reportedly emerged.

According to RMC journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani is in pole position to become the Red Devil's newest owner.

The Qatari-backed bid is being contested by one from British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but it seems the lifelong United fan will be losing out to his Middle Eastern counterparts.

Both offers were submitted last month and have now proceeded to the next stage of the sale, where the suitors will be given private access to the club's financial records in order to finalise their respective bids.

The Glazers have incurred debt worth half a billion pounds since their leveraged takeover of the club in 2005, while the coronavirus pandemic seems to have compounded the American family's financial woes and they now look set to sell the club with the help of the Raine Group.

With the bid from the Gulf state, which is being led by Hamad Al Thani, appearing to lead the way, it is said that it is independent from Qatari Sports Investment, who own Paris Saint-Germain, so should their United takeover be successful, the record Premier League champions will be competing with Les Parisiens for the world's biggest names in the transfer market.

The same report suggests that the Qatari bid is worth £4.4 billion (R96.9 billion), and will be debt-free.
