In the wake of the Madrid derby this past weekend, LaLiga has condemned the racial abuse that was hurled at Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior by Atletico Madrid supporters before and during the game.
Real Maintain 100% Record After Winning Madrid Derby
The Wanda Metropolitano was the scene of some vile fan abuse before a ball was kicked on Sunday evening as scores of Atletico fans sang racist songs on their way into the stadium ahead of the derby.
According to the Daily Mail, the chant "Vinicius is a monkey" was heard outside Los Rojiblancos' stadium before Real's 2-1 victory over their city rivals as Spanish football finds itself caught up in another discrimination scandal.
The racist chants came after a prominent Spanish football agent said on live television that the Brazil international needs to "stop playing the monkey" with his dancing goal celebrations.
"We denounce all incidents inside and outside stadiums. We work with clubs to keep our football friendly and enjoyable," a statement from a LaLiga spokesperson read, as per Reuters.
"Hate speech has no place in LaLiga, and we always work with the clubs and the authorities to identify and bring to justice any such case."
Report: Barcelona Interested In Real Madrid Star
The same report suggests that the league will now study audio and visual footage before filing a report to Spain's Commission against Violence.
The state organisation has the power fine a club or force them to play behind closed doors should it deem fit.
In spite of the seriousness of this matter, it appears only a fine will be issued to the 2020/21 LaLiga champions.
