Lionel Messi has announced his Argentina future after helping inspire the Albiceleste to the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy following a penalty shootout victory over France on Sunday evening.

Argentina Star Criticises Mbappe's Remarks Ahead Of Final

The 35-year-old scored twice in his nation's 3-3 draw with Les Bleus at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday, before converting his effort from 12 yards in the shootout as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's heroics secured Argentina's first World Cup trophy since 1986.

Many believed Messi would follow Angel Di Maria in retiring from international football after the tournament, but the Paris Saint-Germain forward has declared he wants to continue representing the Albiceleste, particularly as a world champion.

"I'm not retiring from the national team," he told Argentine journalist Gaston Edul in a post-match interview.

"I want to continue playing as a champion."

Messi was also named as the World Cup's Golden Ball winner after contributing to 10 goals in seven matches at the showpiece in Qatar.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner is unlikely to feature in the next tournament in 2026, but manager Lionel Scaloni has said the No. 10 shirt will be available to Messi for however long he wants it.
