Arsenal found themselves to be rather busy as the deadline approached, snapping up experienced Italy midfielder Jorginho on an 18-month contract in a deal worth a reported €11.3 million (R213.2 million).
The 31-year-old became surplus to requirements amid Chelsea's pursuit of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who they eventually agreed to buy from Benfica for an English-record transfer fee of €121 million (R2.2 billion).
The Gunners, meanwhile, loaned Belgium international Albert Sambi Lokonga to Crystal Palace for the rest of the season, with several other high-profile loan deals also taking place.
United secured Austria international Marcel Sabitzer's services in a temporary switch from Bayern Munich, while Manchester City agreed to let Joao Cancelo join the Bavarians on loan.
According to reports, the German giants will have the option to buy the 28-year-old versatile fullback for €70 million (R1.3 billion) at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
In Spain, Spanish giants Barcelona sanctioned the free transfer of right-back Hector Bellerin to Sporting Lisbon, who allowed their own right-back Pedro Porro to leave on loan for Tottenham Hotspur. His temporary deal, however, will become permanent upon the season's conclusion.
