In the opening round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Hugo Broos' charges were able to get their campaign off to a winning start as they triumphed over Benin 2-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The person who opened the scoring for the 1996 African champions on that occasion was Tau.
On the opposition bench was former Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr and his assistant Nabil Trabelsi.
The latter witnessed first-hand how the forward, also known as the Lion of Judah, could punish opposition defences.

Trabelsi has strong ties to Tunisian football, having been an assistant manager at Etoile Sportive du Sahel as well as an opposition analyst for the country's national team, and when quizzed on how he thinks Esperance de Tunis will fare against Ahly in the upcoming CAF Champions League final, the French-born German tactician said they need to be wary of Tau.
"The match between Al Ahly and Esperance of Tunisia has equal chances, and it is difficult to predict the winner of the match, and the two teams presented strong performances in this tournament," the Strasbourg-born coach told Cairo24.
"The level of Esperance under coach [Miguel] Cardoso has clearly improved, and the difference between Esperance before and after signing him is huge, and the team has a different look on the field, and this is what we saw in the knockout rounds of the African Champions League.

"Ali Maaloul and Percy Tau are the most dangerous elements in Al Ahly, a duo capable of making a difference at any time, and Al Ahly's weaknesses are the spaces behind Maaloul."
