Morton on defunct clubs in SA
From the likes of Platinum Stars to fallen juggernauts like Bloemfontein Celtic and Bidvest Wits, are examples of popular South African football clubs that have fallen by the wayside, creating an uncomfortable theme in the PSL of teams not lasting as long as they should.
In his latest video, Morton pointed what he describes as a "sad situation in South African Football right now" and how it's not sustainable for clubs to be bought out and stripped of their identity.
"We’ve lost some incredible clubs and have moved clubs away from their support bases. This cant continue," wrote Morton in the caption to his vlog shared on social media.
Morton started off his point by looking back at the DStv Premiership table back in the 2013/14 season, which included five teams that either have new names or cease to exist altogether.
"Two that hurt the most for me are Bidvest Wits, a club that had a massive history behind and Bloemfontein Celtic, they had the best supporters in the country," highlighted Morton.

Brilliant video by Michael Morton on the plight of South African football. As a South African football fan I was hurt by the sales of Wits and Bloem Celtic especially. How are fanbases, heritage, history and our football supposed to grow if this continues??

Needs to end!! https://t.co/fokyhT1xMQ
All of this is just sad honestly. Then again, football clubs in South Africa are just money pits (except maybe Sundowns, Chiefs and Pirates), so this probably won’t go away unless the rules change ?? https://t.co/VlwUyDH03q

The buying of status needs to stop, or it should have strict restrictions. No renaming, rebranding, or relocation of clubs. A heft deposit to be held by an independent party to ensure commitment for 5 years. https://t.co/syFLB0TrnB

They broke us with that one. https://t.co/OxOofpWEeU
Its an absolute joke. Our football will never go anyone when the local game is simply transactional and there is no jeopardy involved. https://t.co/CmA7oHXDLh

Hits home hard indeed it's so unfortunate that these teams and the history behind them have gone into oblivion. The Wits situation is still so vivid esp considering where they were on the log their development structures... number of young players that just vanished into thin air https://t.co/nfcKFZ2FuD

Eish…the worst for me was Wits & Celtics, all that history down the drain??????. My analysis is that having about 50% of clubs being sold may be an indication of firstly demonstrating the difficulties of running a football club & secondly, that the PSL is actually not growing ??????. https://t.co/0sZchrie2N

This is why I’m no longer interested in SA football. I can’t even name 11 players from my favourite local team anymore https://t.co/OPfupjG6lM
