Cape Town City head coach Benni McCarthy says that his side should not be regarded as Absa Premiership title contenders.

City are currently fourth place on the league standings, six points away from log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, and despite the Citizens able to make things difficult for the rest of the top four, McCarthy thinks that his side is not title contenders.

The Mother City-based club still need to play their second fixture against all three clubs in the top three, Sundowns at first place, Bidvest Wits at second and Orlando Pirates at third.

However, should City get any points from these three encounters, it could influence each side’s respective title races.

“We are not even title contenders, just because they see us fourth, now we are title contenders, we don’t fall into that. We just want to enjoy ourselves, our football we want to improve and grow and come where we might end up, it is a plus, it is a bonus and the hard work that they put it. So we are not looking to see what Wits are doing and what Sundowns, Chiefs and Pirates are doing. We are running our own race,” McCarthy said after his side’s 3-2 defeat to Sundowns on Wednesday evening.

“We try and just manage and we don’t want to come to teams like Sundowns and just roll over, we want to compete and make it hard, if we get something, perfect, if we don’t we go back and sit down and learn from where we could (be) better.

“We are not in the title race, it’s Wits, Pirates and Sundowns, they are the title contenders,” he added.
