Teko: I Felt How Hlompho Feels

A single penalty has shocked the footballing world, what do Sean and Teko think about the end of Bafana's 2022 World Cup dream?  Catch the debate on the Carwash by clicking on the podcast player below!

In light of all of the football drama that has occurred over the past week, a story that may have slipped people's minds is that of Hlompho Kekana and Mamelodi Sundowns reaching an amicable agreement for the former captain to leave the Tshwane club. Kekana first joined Sundowns in 2011, leaving Bloemfontein Celtic. Out of all of Hlompho’s appearances, none stand out more than his performance in the Sundowns vs Powerlines game, where the former Mamelodi Sundowns captain helped himself to a remarkable 7 goals; Sundowns won that game 24-0! “Kekena has shown his professionalism for years and he has been a true ambassador to the game,” says Sean Roberts. “Kekena has won 12 trophies in his ten-year spell with the Brazilians, he has been a stalwart in the team.”

Included in those 12 trophies are 6 league titles and a CAF Champions League, but recently Hlompho has revealed the only regret he has: “I’m willing to trade one of my medals if anyone has. It's important for me because I have a five-year-old son who is always telling me about the MTN, so now I need to understand the feeling, I don’t know the feeling,” Hlompho quirked.

Speaking on the matter, former Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana star, Teko Modise (current Mamelodi Sundowns ambassador) says, “myself and Hlompho had conversations [that cannot be mentioned] well before anything.”

Another major story to hit the headlines this past week was the news of Khama Billiat announcing his retirement from international football. The 31-year-old, who plays for Kaizer Chiefs, announced his retirement with a letter he posted on social media after he and the Brave Warriors failed to secure a spot in the next round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

On the latest episode of The Carwash, former Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town goalie Sean Roberts, and Modise analyse the recent drama surrounding Bafana Bafana and Ghana after the Black Stars top their group in controversial fashion. Since the fixture, FIFA has responded to the formal complaint that SAFA has issued regarding the match officials. The crew also discuss the latest news with Gavin Hunts’ suspension from Chippa United and the new ‘caretaker coach.’
