The 2020/21 Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign, will look and feel different from any other season in recent memory. Not only will the top flight be referred to as the DStv Premiership for the first time, but there will also be two new sides in the league, who both bought their status rather than earn promotion outright. Bidvest Wits sold their status to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC, who did qualify for the PSL Playoffs but lost all four matches. Elsewhere, Highlands Park sold their status to TS Galaxy and will also leave Gauteng, and become Mpumalanga’s only Premiership team.
In the latest episode of the SL Podcast’s “Fan Reaction Show”, members of the Soccer Laduma Supporters Club discuss how former Bidvest Wits & Highlands Park fans are feeling after their clubs were sold, and whether or not the system of selling PSL status is fair. While many supporters were very critical of the system, some stated that “football is becoming more of a business”. However, many were critical of how team owners don’t seem to care about fans and stakeholders, and one fan even suggested a change to the rule stating “If they are going to sell status to another team, it’s fine, but the team must remain in the same province at least”.
