How crucial is Chiefs’ transfer ban appeal to Gavin Hunt’s plans for the season? Catch the debate on the Carwash by clicking on the podcast player below!
As the smoke last season’s dramatic conclusion settles, Kaizer Chiefs have been focused on preparations for the 2020/21 campaign, having already parted ways with Ernst Middendorp and Shaun Bartlett. In their place, Amakhosi have landed former Bidvest Wits mentor Gavin Hunt, with Dillon Sheppard and Arthur Zwane joining his technical staff as assistant coaches. The remaining headache for Hunt is whether or not he’ll be able to sign new players and sell underperformers, with Chiefs waiting for the verdict of the transfer ban handed down by FIFA for their August 2018 signing of Andriamirado 'Dax' Andrianarimanana from Fosa Juniors, which sees them barred from transfer activity for two windows.
If the ban is upheld, or if FIFA don’t announce their final ruling before the closing of the current transfer window, Hunt will be forced to make do with what he has, and selling any current players may leave him short on firepower next season. Amakhosi have been linked with moves for former Wits stars Sifiso Hlanti and Thabang Monare, which would give them options in defence and midfield, areas where Chiefs have recently faced criticism. In the latest episode of the SL Podcast’s “The Carwash” with Teko Modise and Sean Roberts, the former Premier Soccer League (PSL) stars debate the importance of the transfer ban appeal to Hunt’s plans for the season, and whether he’d be able to win trophies with the current squad.
