In the latest episode of The SL Podcast’s “Player’s Abroad”, FC Honka forward Darren Smith joins the show to discuss his early career and ambitions for the new season in Finland. The 24-year-old striker started his career in the Ajax Cape Town academy before joining AmaZulu and then Santos. In 2017, he signed with SuperSport United where he made six PSL appearances, scoring once. He struggled for game time at the club, however, and in December 2019 he completed a move to Finland where he signed for second division side Ekenäs IF.
In his maiden season abroad, Smith scored 18 goals in 22 league appearances to win the Golden Boot award, while he was also crowned Best Striker of the Season and Player of the Season. His form then earned him a move to the Finnish Premier Division where he has signed for top-flight side FC Honka for the 2021 campaign.
Smith discusses how he was told to consider a career outside of football, but through belief in God and himself, never gave up on his dream and eventually found himself living his dream in Europe.
