In the latest episode of The Big Interview, brought to you by Total, Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis discusses the impact that World Cup qualification had on the careers of national team players, with several players joining European sides who are in contention for UEFA Women’s Championship competitions. Despite the implications of the Coronavirus pandemic meaning that international competition has come to a halt, multiple Banyana players including Kelso Peskin, Nothando Vilakazi & Amanda Mthandi have recently moved abroad.
“I’m very excited you know. Thembi, Linda, Janine, Refiloe and a few others have actually played abroad before, but the World Cup has definitely opened up so many [more] opportunities for others, you know? Some have gone to better leagues. There are many others that have gone before, and playing at the World Cup has just confirmed what we knew along, that we have talent in this country but they just needed to be seen at the highest level. Make no mistake, our players have put in the work and now they’re reaping all the rewards.”
Ellis also tells SL Radio how she and the Banyana Banyana players are making sure they #dontdroptheball during lockdown!
