The Absa Premiership and GladAfrica Championship’s proposed restart has been delayed multiple times, despite Minister Nathi Mthethwa giving the green light for football to return on June 24th. The rumoured rift between the Premier Soccer League (PSL) & the South African Football Association (SAFA) has appeared to have affected negotiations for the proposed restart, alongside supposed COVID-19 compliance issues among teams and problems with referee fitness. On SL Radio's 'The Carwash', former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brian Baloyi & former Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund weigh in on the issues between football’s governing bodies.
“As much as FIFA doesn’t allow governments to get involved in football matters, I think in this case government should be one who lays the rules so that we can finalise this issue”, ‘Spiderman’ states.
“Government should play a referee if you may say, but it’s long overdue, the problems we’ve had between PSL & SAFA. We should even be using this situation to rectify all of the wrongs that have been there for many years”.
Legendary PSL coach Gordon Igesund also joined the podcast to weigh in, stating, “This season has been totally different to any other season. This virus has really put a spoke in the wheel and there’s so much at stake. There are people’s lives at stake, there are sponsorships involved you know? We want to get the league back. At the end of the day, both parties need to be corrected here, they’ve got great responsibilities.”
